FESTIVALZONE Salzgasse Freistadt *Keep Connected*
Autofrei + Freistadt = Autofreistadt [EN: free of cars + free city = city free of cars]?
Based on this play on words, an idea took form to occupy the Salzgasse in the inner city of Freistadt – a place that is otherwise a parking space and a passage way – at least temporarily with festival projects, concerts, readings, and public discussions surrounding topics of mobility and questions about whom public space belongs to.
For three days in June, the Salzgasse was closed off for cars within the framework of the project Bewusstseinsbildung Festivalregion supported by LEADER and declared a festival zone. Artists, activists, festival audiences, experts, and politicians held discussions, cooked, took part in asphalt stock sport – or were simply there to listen, watch, eat, drink, and hang out together.
The Bewusstseinsbildung began with a reading of the Czech railway author Jaroslav Rudiš, as well as four discussion panels on the beauty and the boundaries of traveling by train. It was moderated by Marita Koppensteiner and Marie-Therese Jahn from the Freies Radio Freistadt.
The next day continued with the conference verflechten which stood for cultural and regional development. Cultural workers from different generation talked about projects, experiences, and many things that are needed to help cultural activities bloom in rural areas.
On the third day, three discussion panels in the Salzhof in Freistadt dealt with questions surrounding a livable future in rural areas. Aspects such as a secure supply of energy, climate friendly modes of transport, and a varied cultural community are gaining more and more important for people living in the region. Representatives of many different fields of expertise entered into a dialogue together and under the guidance of Martin Wassermair (political editor at DORFTV), they discussed topics such as mobility, traffic, energy, and climate action.

DORFTV was on-site with film teams, and all discussion panels were broadcast live on Freies Radio Freistadt.
