
{"id":53053,"date":"2017-05-30T21:39:04","date_gmt":"2017-05-30T19:39:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fdr.at\/?p=53053\/"},"modified":"2019-11-20T11:18:58","modified_gmt":"2019-11-20T10:18:58","slug":"by-no-means-uninvited-the-festival-of-the-regions-with-32-art-and-culture-projects","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fdr.at\/en\/by-no-means-uninvited-the-festival-of-the-regions-with-32-art-and-culture-projects\/","title":{"rendered":"By no means \u201cuninvited\u201d: The Festival of the Regions with 32 art and culture projects"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Under\u00a0<strong>the motto \u201cUninvited Guests\u201d from 30 June to 9 July 2017\u00a0 the FESTIVAL OF THE REGIONS is stopping off in Marchtrenk, and with 32 art and culture projects dedicates itself to aspects of fleeing and mobility, of hospitality and resentment as well as the artistic approach to them. <!--more--> The opening weekend is marked by wide diversity: alongside the Austrian premiere of Marta G\u00f3rnicka\u2019s \u201cHymn to Love\u201d and an exclusive concert by the band Kreisky, a parcours for the opening invites visitors to get to know the festival projects.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>200 artists, players from 26 countries, including many people from Marchtrenk, will be involved in the FESTIVAL OF THE REGIONS 2017. The whole focus is on the participation of as many people as possible, open dialogue and the connection of art and everyday culture: <em>\u201cTogether with artists, creators of culture, and good forces from the area, a great deal of creative energy will be released. We can already see this in the preparatory work and we are looking forward to a multifaceted programme both in terms of its content and disciplines. Numerous projects are based on participation and directly incorporate people and the location \u2013 a process that will now reach its high point in the festival \u2013 we are looking forward to it!\u201d<\/em> <strong>says the artistic director<\/strong> <strong>Gottfried Hattinger.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Barbara Mitterlehner, business manager of the FESTIVAL OF THE REGIONS<\/strong>, is convinced of the long-lasting effect of this lively artistic dialogue with Marchtrenk: <em>\u201cMarchtrenkers\u2019 interest is already noticeable. Informing, exciting people\u2019s curiosity and in this way encouraging a dialogue with forms of contemporary art and cultural work \u2013 we see this as an essential part of our work. We are very confident that this togetherness will also offer a sustainable impulse for Marchtrenk.\u201d\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n<p>The town of Marchtrenk, for its part, is looking forward to an inspiring exchange: <em>The essential theme of the 13th FESTIVAL OF THE REGIONS<\/em> <em>strikes a chord in Marchtrenk\u2019s town history. We look forward to being able to play host to and to mentor and experience a creative and stimulating process. The opportunity to gain new perspectives on our town, on our history and society through this has something dynamic about it and in any case arouses curiosity,\u201d <\/em>says <em>\u00a0<\/em><strong>Paul Mahr, Mayor of Marchtrenk<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cSince its inception the FESTIVAL OF THE REGIONS<\/em> <em>has positioned itself as an innovative and discursive format. In the context of participative and contemporary arts praxis, the linking of socially important questions to regional particularities can touch on existing circumstances and put them up for discussion. We are curious as to the place the people of Marchtrenk will give the FESTIVAL OF THE REGIONS\u201d, <\/em>say <strong>Dagmar H\u00f6ss<\/strong> and <strong>Gerald Priewasser-H\u00f6ller<\/strong> <strong>of the managing committee of the FESTIVAL OF THE REGIONS.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Colourful opening round on the first weekend<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The tone for the opening of the FESTIVAL OF THE REGIONS <strong>on Friday 30 June <\/strong>is set by the Austrian premiere of <strong>\u00a0Marta G\u00f3rnicka\u2019s \u201cHymn to Love\u201d<\/strong><em>, \u201ca work about a Europe that closes ranks.\u201d <\/em>From 14:00 a <strong>grand opening parcours <\/strong>invites visitors to get to know the festival projects. The <strong>opening ceremony in the presence of federal minister Thomas Drozda, of the provincial governor Thomas Stelzer <\/strong>with an <strong>opening speech by the political scientist and journalist Sibylle Hamann<\/strong>, music from <strong>\u201cKlingenden Haus\u201d<\/strong> by <strong>G\u00f6tz Bury<\/strong> and a <strong>\u201cMaking of\u201d by dorf.tv. on the development of the festival <\/strong>\u00a0takes place from 20:30 in the festival centre in Welser Stra\u00dfe.<\/p>\n<p>A highlight of the opening weekend is <strong>Willi Dorner\u2019s<\/strong> <strong>\u201c<s>Zugezogen<\/s>\u201d<\/strong>, which with the participation of numerous Marchtrenkers will take place as a \u201cchoreographic walk\u201d through the town and will be presented as a photo exhibition. With recourse to the dynamic population development of Marchtrenk after the Second World War, Dorner links regional history with the elements and aesthetics of his choreographic concept.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>exclusive concert by Kreisky <\/strong>(the first regular concert with new songs by the band this year) and <strong>Simon Mayer\u2019s <\/strong>performance <strong>\u201cSons of Sissy\u201d <\/strong>are further highpoints of this festival weekend.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Public space as political art space<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cShould art come, or stay where the pepper grows?<\/em> The people of Marchtrenk have already been confronted with this provocative question by the <strong>artist duo Ingke G\u00fcnther and J\u00f6rg Wagner <\/strong>in the run-up to the FESTIVAL OF THE REGIONS and asked for <strong>\u201cGood Reasons\u201d <\/strong>for or against art. While in <strong>\u201cGood Reasons\u201d <\/strong>political space starts outside our front door, <strong>Anja Westerfr\u00f6lke<\/strong> addresses the <strong>\u201cZwischenraum\u201d <\/strong>[In-between space] that appears in transit and waiting. With <strong>\u201cGartenpolitik\u201d<\/strong> the Berlin artists\u2019 group <strong>Club Real <\/strong>declares the garden as political terrain, and with <strong>\u201cDie Unbekannte\u201d<\/strong>[The Unknown] <strong>Amina Handke<\/strong> takes up profoundly sociocritical issues and raises the approach to them for discussion in an interactive \u201chitchhiking performance\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>With <strong>\u201cEs irrt der Mensch\u201d<\/strong> [People Are Wrong], using large tape-drawing facade images <strong>Lena Lapschina<\/strong> turns Linzer Stra\u00dfe and Eichenstra\u00dfe into a large-format \u201cgalerie d\u2019art\u201d.\u00a0 <strong>Leonhard M\u00fcllner and Georg Ritter<\/strong> also target houses in <strong>\u201cSag zum Abschied leise Servus\u201d<\/strong> [Say a Quiet <em>Servus <\/em>When You Go], but in jumping out of windows offering them as a \u201cspringboard out of confinement into the wide world, or just into the town of Marchtrenk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The bench by the artist duo <strong>Torsten Grosch and Haike Rausch \u00a0from 431art<\/strong> can also be used for a break or a rest, but it is just a <strong>\u201cVerschnaufen auf Zeit\u201d <\/strong>[Pause for Breath]: under strict time rules those lingering there will be rudely encouraged to be on their way.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Portraits and and character studies of Marchtrenk<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The projects<strong> \u201cMuseum f\u00fcr ungebetene Gastgeschenke\u201d <\/strong>[The Museum of Uninvited Presents], <strong>\u201cWanderuni in Marchtrenk\u201d <\/strong>[Travelling Uni in Marchtrenk], <strong>\u201cMagic Moments in Marchtrenk\u201d<\/strong> and <strong>\u201cDinge die bleiben\u201d <\/strong>[Things that Remain] present case studies of Marchtrenk from various, sometimes unusual parameters: thus <strong>Corina Forthuber and David Six<\/strong> go in search of unwanted presents and would like to paint a portrait of Marchtrenk through its rejected gifts. For the duration of the festival Marchtrenk will also become a location for the Linz University of Art: students from the <strong>KunstWanderUni<\/strong> [Travelling Art Uni] conduct performative urban research and put the town and its inhabitants under the microscope. In <strong>\u201cMagic Moments in Marchtrenk\u201d<\/strong>,<strong> Fabian Faltin and Team<\/strong> would like to entice visitors with all the methods of location marketing. For the project <strong>\u201cDinge die bleiben\u201d<\/strong>,<strong> Leonhard M\u00fcllner and Susanna Flock<\/strong> consulted the online sales platform willhaben.at and purchased things from Marchtrenk that now return there again as scanned 3-D objects.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Marchtrenk\u2019s history as a multifaceted reference point<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Interesting explorations of history in general and Marchtrenk\u2019s history in particular are the basis of numerous other festival projects: while in <strong>\u201cMap Series (Russia)\u201d Ana Mendes<\/strong> is on the trail of real and fictional boundaries of ancient world empires, and in her performance puts cards from the Russian empire under her sewing machine, a shrill Grande Dame who achieved regional fame in Marchtrenk provides the name for <strong>\u201cauprinzessin\u201d <\/strong>[riverine-forest princess]: it plays with the changing of values and devaluations by which discarded and disposed of objects return to the town as art.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Katarina Matiasek\u2019s sound installation \u201cAngez\u00e4hlt \/ Counted out\u201d<\/strong> returns an archive finding of eight voice recordings by Italian prisoners of war in Marchtrenk of 1918 to the place where they were recorded and gives back a voice to those who were then examined under compulsion in the prisoner-of-war camp in Marchtrenk in the then Habsburg empire.<\/p>\n<p>In <strong>Miriam Hamann\u2019s <\/strong>light sculpture <strong>\u201cRunning Light\u201d <\/strong>Marchtrenk\u2019s 28-metre-high landmark, the water tower, becomes a lighthouse and an abstracted symbol for orientation and navigation.<\/p>\n<p>With the installation <strong>\u201cWas war .\u00a0.\u00a0.\u201d <\/strong>[What Was .\u00a0.\u00a0.] <strong>Astrid Benzer<\/strong> takes a walk through Marchtrenk\u2019s town history: presented in the Old Cinema, which for many Marchtrenkers has long faded into oblivion, Astrid Benzer traces the mechanisms of collective and selective remembering and forgetting.<\/p>\n<p>In the video and photo installation <strong>\u201cStreitross Meister der Kurve\u201d <\/strong>[Charger, Masters of the Curve] \u00a0<strong>Charles Kaltenbacher <\/strong>connects flashy costumes, contemporary power-dressing and testosterone-fuelled heroic pathos and powerplay with Marchtrenk\u2019s eponymous chargers (\u201cMarchtrenk\u201d: a combination of Old High German <em>Marah <\/em>(charger) and <em>Trenka <\/em>(drinking trough)). He mercilessly transforms these into a motorised present day, among other things on the Austrian \u00d6AMTC driving association driving-technique site.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Performances, literature, discourse, choir &amp; concerts<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Great stage performances also star at this year\u2019s FESTIVAL OF THE REGIONS: alongside the opening choral work <strong>\u201cHymn to Love\u201d<\/strong> by <strong>Marta G\u00f3rnicka<\/strong>, the performance <strong>\u201cFruits of Labour\u201d <\/strong>by the Belgian artist Miet Warlop will also be presented at the FESTIVAL OF THE REGIONS: a \u201ccrossover of performance, concert and visual art\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Simon Mayer\u2019s <\/strong>\u201ccrisp\u201d performance <strong>\u201cSons of Sissy\u201d <\/strong>awaits, with an experimental exploration of \u201ctraditional Alpine live music, various group dances and ritual practices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A two-day <strong>reading festival with music <\/strong>that offers a stage for young and established, regional and supra-regional writers in the Wiesleitnerhof and Alte Kirche cultural area, the <strong>Klingendes Haus\u201d <\/strong>installation by<strong> G\u00f6tz Bury<\/strong>, which gets a whole house to mutate into a resonating body with curious instruments, or a <strong>Drive Thru-Bar <\/strong>as a serving point for \u201ccultural fast food\u201d on the edge of the B1 main road are further programme highlights of this year\u2019s festival.<\/p>\n<p>The 2017 FESTIVAL OF THE REGIONS will be accompanied by a <strong>\u201cPalaver\u201d series <\/strong>by the\u00a0<strong>Kepler Salon in Marchtrenk <\/strong>as well as by features and talks on the festival events by <strong>REFUGEE LINZ TV<\/strong> (refugees take over the programming in dorf.tv).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Students from the NMS2 school in in Marchtrenk <\/strong>will make a documentary of the <strong>2017 FESTIVAL OF THE REGIONS<\/strong>, under the direction of <strong>Liesa Kovacs from the Medienkulturhaus Wels.<\/strong> The Marchtrenk-born writer <strong>Angela Flam<\/strong> will observe the FESTIVAL OF THE REGIONS from a literary perspective; her impressions and articles will be published in the catalogue, which like the documentary will be issued in autumn 2017.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fascinating light and shadow play: T<\/strong><strong>he trailer by Karin Fisslthaler<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The services of the <strong>media artist Karin Fisslthaler<\/strong> have been acquired for the 2017 festival trailer. Staged as a fascinating play of light an shadow, Fisslthaler alias <strong>Cherry Sunkist<\/strong> also contributes to the music that can be heard live at her concert and DJing at the FdR opening party.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The festival centre as a \u201cmultifunctional steel skeleton\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Between the old and the new church on Welser Stra\u00dfe the festival centre is an architectural and functional anchor point in the festival events: multifunctional for events, exhibitions, concerts, catering and as a contact point for information, this grandstand construction shines as an \u201coutsized, unvarnished steel skeleton\u201d and functions as a structural housing for individual functional elements such as containers and transporter wrecks that hold festival exhibitions.<\/p>\n<p>For the catering in the festival centre we are pleased to be working with <strong>\u201c\u00dcber den Tellerrand Linz\u201d association: <\/strong>with cuisine as one of the most accepted media of cultural exchange, the association is committed to the integration of refugees in Austria. (<a href=\"https:\/\/ueberdentellerrand.org\/de\/index\/\">https:\/\/ueberdentellerrand.org\/de\/index\/<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/>\nArt education<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The art education includes guided festival tours for groups, individual visitors and students as well as the <strong>\u201cBlind Date\u201d <\/strong>education format:<\/p>\n<p>In the<strong> FdR &#8220;Blind Date&#8221;<\/strong> festival, visitors meet an unknown counterpart: sometimes it is a member of the festival management, sometimes a technician, sometimes they get to know artists and guests personally.
