    • „What do you believe in?“ — the theatre director, Richard Maxwell, directs this question to twenty residents of Eferding whose statements are filmed and shown on stage as 3-D projections. Ads (= advertisements) offers participants from various age-groups and occupations the opportunity of expressing their personal convictions in public. They receive three minutes‘ time to send their message which is not influenced in any way; the only precondition is that it be genuine. „With their responses, participants open up a window onto their town for us. This way we get to know a community with its diverse opinions and interests.“ (Richard Maxwell)

    • 3) Vegetable Orchestra
    • The Vegetable Orchestra plays on instruments made of fresh vegetables. From many and various sorts, original-sounding utensils are created with which the ensemble evokes a musically and aesthetically unique sound-universe that plays out over a broad spectrum of styles. The vegetables on this occasion naturally come from Eferding. "They operate record players with bean pods, make flutes from carrots and smash cabbage heads on stage in the manner of Jimi Hendrix. The sound of this Vegetable Orchestra is unique." (RP online)
The Vegetable Orchestra was founded in Vienna in 1998 and since then has been on tour worldwide.

    • The Festival of Regions commissioned works by renowned composers for a capella pieces with the aim of drawing attention to and raising awareness of present-day musical composition among amateur choirs and the general public. On this evening, a broad spectrum of modern choir music will be on offer, culminating in a brilliant finish in which all the participating choirs unite in a 300-voice Locus iste causing the church space to vibrate.

A multi-disciplinary project, where the history of the town and its residents is intertwined with the para-scientific and artistic evidence of a cucumber civilization. A great feast with film, spectacle, concerts, an exhibition, a cucumber fete. A project realized by Teatr Cinema / Poland and associated artists with the active participation of Eferding’s residents.

    • 6) Preserving
    • The Rabtaldirndln have lost their pleasure in the countryside. They have done enough preserving, making everything themselves, but it’s never made a profit. If you’re not allowed to put your own work on the account, then it simply isn’t worth it. They’re fed up. From now on they’ll let others do the preserving. There is servant Bodo, jam as well as pickles. The back-to-nature trend amounts to a feminist setback. The statement, "I really like doing it", is shown to be a white lie. The Rabtaldirndln drive through Eferding and sell goods at their true social cost. They present the evidence of suffering and exploitation. Solidarity meetings and demonstrations take place.

    • The various rooms — traditional bar, kitchens, hall, cellar — of the former public house, The Blue Grape, will become topic and location for artistic interventions. In Social Pub Web it is a matter of transferring former functions of this place — communication, networking and myth-production — to today's social reality. With installations, performances, culinary and social stagings, the pub will be opened up step-by-step to allow people to walk in and experience it, until finally its social noise will penetrate the walls to public urban space.

    • Art Inspectorate 2 takes up its post in Eferding and calls on residents to denounce any irregularities or report suspicions of any kind. It may be a matter of denunciations of art and culture; the neighbour's dog or garden can be reported; the monopoly of a local bank, etc. Deutschbauer, Jagerhofer and Ungepflegt will investigate, and all reports will be followed up. On patrols through Eferding, residents will be approached directly; the duty room is open to all. In addition, evenings with social events will take place: the reported facts of the case and offences will be laid open to inspection and will be tried publicly.

    • In the end, Gossip will, be a series of videos projected onto shop windows in the centre of Eferding. The videos, however, will be the result of a longer process. The artist will be meeting the town’s residents during the months leading up to the exhibition’s opening, getting to know them and finding out gossip about them. The videos will be acted out by actors revealing rumours about Eferding’s secrets. It will not be possible to identify exactly whom the gossip is about, or if it’s true, but it will perhaps be possible to guess whom it concerns. Or maybe not, but it definitely will be interesting to guess. And it will be inevitable to ask yourself whether these snippets of gossips are true. Are they ever?

    • Harvesting vegetables and fruit in the field in any weather is not a dream-job. Nevertheless, thousands of people leave their home countries such as Ukraine, Poland, Kosovo, Slovakia or Romania for two to six months each year to work on Austrian fields — for an income that would never be accepted by local workers. The film, Return, accompanies foreign harvest-workers to their work in Eferding and into the milieu of their countries of origin. On the basis of their personal stories and in interviews with those involved, the various motives for seasonal migration are made apparent.

    • 12) Migrants: the case of Eferding
    • "When I began to investigate where the food I buy in a nearby shop comes from, I found that I have the whole world in my neighbouring street. The exotic sorts of fruit and fresh vegetables on offer in the middle of a cold winter must certainly have been grown elsewhere, but also most of the grain and seeds come from countries with cheap labour. And like all migrants, this food comes quietly into the country. I photographed the food types one after the other and then noted down the vegetable’s name and where it comes from. In this way a document has been compiled with more than 400 sorts of fruit and vegetables, including a list of their respective homelands." (Tanja Lažetić)

    • 13) Plac (The Market)
    • Ana Hušman‘s film about the vegetable market in Zagreb is not only an impressive art work, but also represents a plea for preferring regional produce to imported commodities. The discourse on the topics of organic and slow food is certainly also the trend in Eferding. Apparently it’s a matter of the quality of domestic produce and of methods of preparing and preserving. Although the insistence on local food and the refusal of cheap imports seem to be thoroughly reasonable, the film treats on the side also that narrow border-line where the rejection of what is ‚foreign‘ can also end up in prejudices and hostility.

Each cucumber is individual, but also immediately recognizable as a cucumber and attributable to a whole — as is the case with people." And: "My works have to do with interpreting the world; they are also a re-creation of reality. Of course with a large pinch of irony."

    • Nora Gregor was a famous actress who appeared for the first time in a silent film at the age of 19. In 1937 she married the militia leader, Ernst Rüdiger Starhemberg, with whom she had to emigrate to Switzerland and then to France and South America after Hitler's invasion of Austria. The artist Lisa Kortschak took up the search for the person of Nora Gregor, her cinematic work and her artistic career that was marked so deeply by political circumstances. Her biography and its contemporary history will be woven into a film documentation to be shown at the ancestral seat of Starhemberg.

    • How do you live in a country when your own way of living is somewhat apart from what is generally accepted and respected? Bureaucratic files are also the place for marginal existences in a village. If, up until 1974, you could be arrested and locked up for vagabondage, today it is mostly in administrative offences where 'rural deviance' is registered in files and thus made visible. In the present case, the considerable costs associated with an obligatory drain connection not only lead to year-long proceedings that are ongoing to the present day, but also to a series of other legal entanglements. This case constructed exclusively from the existing files can be heard as a radio feature/radio play.

    • With the legendary artistic action Digging Up of the Fluxus artist, Wolf Vostell, a work from the history of art will be shown in the exhibition that fits perfectly with the Eferding theme. In 1974 Vostell invited visitors to dig up a field in Worpswede that had been rigged with wires. The noises coming about in this way he recorded on tape. "When digging up we come across our recollections; the sounds while digging are the emissions of our thoughts," Vostell commented on his action.

    • The sound installation is an ensemble of 'self-playing', resounding cymbals of various sizes and constructions that are set up in the topographical form of the Eferding Basin. A hovering ensemble, metallically gold. The artistic cymbal landscape resounds with 'field recordings' from the town of Eferding and its environs. Thus, natural sounds are sent through the complex resonating bodies of various cymbals — a kind of historical estrangement from afar. A tractor becomes a church-tower bell. The languid summer breeze sparkles metallically. Contrasts of real sounds from the acoustic sound-storage medium make the connection to the present.

    • 20) The Eferding Wind Set-back
    • If the flutter of a butterfly's wing in Brazil can trigger a tornado in Texas, what happens when in Eferding a cubic metre of wind is set back 200 metres? On 7 June on a five-metre-high scaffolding, a cubic metre of wind will be caught in a transparent container. At a distance of four metres against the wind direction, a second tower of scaffolding will be erected, a wooden bridge laid from the first to the second tower, and the box with the air will be pushed back. The first tower will now be disassembled and erected once again at a distance of four metres windward. Wooden bridge,... etc. The procedure will be repeated until, ten days later, the cubic metre of air on the wandering platforms has been set back about 200 metres. There it will then be released into the current weather conditions.

Who were those residents of Eferding who were deported to Hartheim during the Nazi period? Whence came the warriors who lie buried in the Deinham Military Cemetery? These and other questions are posed by the artist, Wolfram P. Kastner, who thus digs up Eferding's history. Along the existing History Path, walls grow out of the ground that recall happenings from distant and recent times by means of texts and images.

Students criss-cross the town with measuring tapes, sit down at regulars' tables in the pubs, climb church towers and search through the town chronicles for incidents. Complimentary ticket, vanishing points! compiles, together with the town's residents, a huge town map. It starts in secret, turns inside out at the festival's beginning from a container and finally grows over the town square with the help of everybody. They arouse curiosity. Eferding is dug up — by sensinauts and through sensinauts.

    • With agriculture, the age of labour began. Particularly after the Second World War, the mechanization of agriculture advanced rapidly and tractors took on the labour of draught animals. The economy and a society striving for achievement led the farmer into an agricultural industry today whose motto is ‘grow or perish’. The small farmer has long since become uneconomical and is dying out. The starting-point for Hannes Stelzhamers project is a Steyr 80 (15)-tractor that is typical for the countryside and the initial industrialization of farms. From donations of old metal from farmers in the area, a mobile sculpture is to be developed as a recycling process.

    • When people go, the landscape goes too. What remains are the houses. They bear the stories of those who have moved away. Even when the houses decay, succumbing to structural change, the stories are there where life used to be. The Alpine region is affected by deserted places. Everywhere in Austria there are empty former farms decaying. At the same time, new land for construction is released without let-up. Empty Landscape tells the stories of deserted places, gives a face to farm ruins, inquires into the values associated with the land. The public will be presented with stories in the form of an audio play with a view to the landscape around Eferding.

Matched to one another, they form an aleatoric musical piece. In the thoroughly polemical songs they criticize and caricature social inequality.

We two, my small town and I, are awaiting an unusual accumulation of diggings-up of history, present-day and future of the town. Therefore I can hardly wait to poke my curious Eferding nose daily into the slits, cracks and joins of these festival up-turnings. Each day between 7 and 16 June I will write daily in the form of a blog about what the projects do with the little town, the people and me. And because I am not the only curious Eferding nose, and additionally to my own nasal wisdom, I will also ask each day and without forewarning another curious Eferding nose for its opinion about festival goings-on. Two noses smell more than one.
